3-Year-Olds Can Do It

My errand (therefore, grocery day) is Wednesday. On Thursdays I have a reminder to "refill snack bucket" and "cut up fruits and vegetables". This doesn't happen every week for me, but it is nice when I can take a minute to pull grapes off stems and sort vegetables into smaller amounts for school.

This snack bucket came around only in the last few years when I had kids old enough to ask if they could have a snack (as opposed to just helping themselves to snack after snack.) It's one of my favorite things because it lets my kids know what they can snack on when they can have a snack. We have fruit leather and raisins and nuts and crackers and pumpkin seeds (truly, favorites around here) and many more things. It changes based off whatever I buy and put together. I also like that giving them portions helps the entire box not be gone in one "snack" time.  And my kids try new things more readily from this bucket. Truly.
Right next to the snack bucket is our sandwich bucket. When my kids are 3 I let them start learning how to put together a PB&J and it's their favorite thing. This bucket is down low and usually has peanut butter, honey and Nutella and a loaf of bread on top. Everything is in one, easy-to-reach place so anyone can get themselves food in a pinch.

Finding ways to make things easier for kids is my favorite way to get down on their level and think about what they might need to accomplish the things I ask of them. Plus, it's kinda nice when my 5-year-old can start getting lunch when she's ready, usually about 5 minutes before I am ready.

What tasks in the kitchen have you catered to children?
