All That Stuff You Are "Supposed" To Do

Sometimes in life there are things and often lists of things that you are "suppposed to do". All these things can feel overwhelming and sometimes neverending. But while there may be things you are supposed to do, always remember that 1) you ultimately control your task list and 2) sometimes your attitude makes all the difference.
One of the lists of things I am "supposed to do" comes from being a member of my church. This list can seem long and overwhelming and often like I'm falling short in at least one of the areas, if not more. However, when I look at things with a perspective of "this is not man, but God asking this of me" and "with His help, all things are possible", I am more easily able to pinpoint where I need help and to play up my strengths.

For me, personally, it is easiest to make a different task for each item. I am combined several things into one task in the past, but this only works for me until I go on vacation, my husband's work schedule changes or I do not sleep well due to having children to care for. Perhaps having many of these things grouped together will one day work, but for now, I like them separated. An added bonus is that I get to check off each things off my list instead of hanging onto that one task until all 7 tasks are actually completed. Whichever way makes sense in your brain, do it that way.

Another question: why write down the things that you basically have made into habits? Here's the why: Because life is messy and crazy some days. At times I will go for years without having to think about many of the habit tasks and I check them off the very first time I open my task app - because they are already done. However, since I never know exactly when my children will interrupt my usual habits or when trips are taken or neighbors and friends need my help, I have thoroughly enjoyed and found immensely helpful to just keep these habit tasks up and cycling through. On an app, there really is no way that it is making you waste time. And for those habits that you really do not want to start again after every interruption in your life, this is truly the easiest and best way to make sure you stay on target.

When I first started creating this life plan, I started figuring out ways to reach my goals and push forward my dreams. I feel completely overwhelmed with the little things when I feel as though I have to remember everything in my head. Because sometimes we forget until we are laying in bed, about to drift off, and there is no way we want to drag ourselves out of bed at the end of a really long day. Whatever you need to do to help you create the habits and disciplines that will help you achieve your goals, that is what you should focus on. And do not shun using an app just because those are "already habits". If you have not missed a day in 10 years, then great. Otherwise, be honest with yourself, write it down, and watch how you are able to finally achieve those goals and dreams that have stayed just out of reach for years because you were trying to do and remember everything in your head.

It is time to embrace "all that stuff you're supposed to do" as those things that you truly want to do. Do not give up on creating habits and reaching for goals that YOU desire and want in your life.
Find the way that works and go after it today.

  1. I love this post and this idea! Especially with a new baby right now, sometimes all those habitual things slowly go out the window and you feel like you're scrambling to remember to fit at least something in. I definitely want to implement something like this for me, thank you!

  2. Sometimes I like to have all the little things listed just so I can have the joy of checking them off! I hear the reason is that it gives some sort of endorphin surge.
