Something else I have realized is that I like to add EVERYTHING that is happening on the calendar. It helps me remember and verify that someone will definitely be gone during a certain time period, or that we really can fit that event into our schedules. The more information I add with actual times attached to them, the better I am at planning and scheduling. However, I cannot add things without times on my calendar or it is way too overwhelming and cluttered.
One thing I have done for the past few vacations our family has taken is to add on my calendar, at the end of the day, what specifically our family did that day. When we went to Disney World, I added which land we went to, like "Magic Kingdom". I usually just add it as an all day event so it stays bold at the top of my calendar. If we're having a chill day on vacation, I will add "Swimming/Relaxing" to the calendar. When we look back, whether to organize pictures, remember what we did or for any number of reasons, I have this handy log of where we went and a small glimpse into what we did. It has been helpful SO many times and it is such a easy way of remembering exactly what days we played at the beach with cousins or went on a boat tour together.

I do know that everyone is a little different though. Do you add everything on your calendar - even set things like school or church, or do you only add new things?
For those of you who do it one way, but don't feel like it's working for you, try it the other way for six months and see if you have found a new way to organize your calendar, either by adding everything with times attached or only things not set.
When it comes to calendars, what works for you?
