How do you take a huge goal and chunk it down to daily,
small, manageable tasks?
Having goals is wonderful! I believe everyone needs goals
and things to be moving towards for happiness and to be able to see their
personal growth. Sometimes when we look back over a day or two, it is hard to
see any progress. However, when you continually push through small, daily tasks, a little bit, every day, day after day,
and look back over a few weeks or a year, the results are huge and you will
notice that you have grown and learned so much.
So, pick a goal: do you want to read a book? Save money for
a trip? Systematically work through your house in an effort to clean things up?
Write a book? What is the goal that seems "too big" in this world of “instant
gratification”?
Once you have chosen your goal, you need to choose a
deadline to work towards. Then you can divide the goal in the amount of time
you set and put that small chunk in your task list on a daily or weekly basis.
By doing these little tasks day after day, you will notice a huge jump in your
focus on the goal and you will be able to tell if you need more time towards a
particular goal or if you will achieve your goal much sooner, or right on time.
Without doing the work on laying out the specifics, it will be very hard to
get the drive to actually start AND continue on day 3 of your pursuit of your
goal.
Divide books into pages that need to be read each day or week; divide deeper housework or organizing into a timed amount or shelf or bin; divide your goals up into small sections and if you realize that what you chose was too much and too big, start again and break the goal up into smaller amounts and adjust your expectations.
The important part is to set goals and create a plan to achieve them. It does not matter that things get in the way and you do not have the time to do as much as you thought you might. What matters is that you continue to adjust what you can do with pushing yourself and moving forward to achieve those things that truly matter to you.
What goals will you set today to move your life in the direction you want to be moving?
