My Essential 5

This summer has been a busy one for us. We have had several trips - from weeks long to just a day - and we have had lots of time to play and enjoy ourselves, too. We have had days packed with things and a few days where absolutely no one had any plans for me to leave the house and those days were treasured!
So, how do things stay more on the sane side when you have schedules that are different and scattered and you do not want to feel like you are having "fun time hangover" when you finally come to terms with the state of your kitchen or the fact that you cannot remember when the last time your 3-year-old got their teeth brushed?
I am certain that you know what helps you the most. Tune into that and even write some of your "helps" down as we close out the last few weeks of summer. Try to enjoy this time the best you can while not secretly making a count down chain, pining for the day the kids go back to school. Enjoy the kids, be kind to yourself and take a look at the top 5 things I make sure start off my days:

1) Pray. There really is not a whole lot to say about this other than I absolutely cannot pull myself out of bed and start my day without connecting with my God.
2) Meditation. I am pretty far from hippie and most things connected to them. And while many "hippie" ideas and practices are becoming more mainstream, meditating was not up there for me. Until recently. I had a few great conversations with some friends and it seemed the common thread was meditating. I read this book, downloaded a few apps like this and this and jumped into things. If I get nothing else done before children wake up, I shoot for praying and meditation.
3) Reading Scriptures. Normally I would say that I like to study them, but that has been pushing the limits this summer and reading is wonderful.
4) Exercise. Some form of activity everyday is essential.
5) Sleep. This summer I have been a little more relaxed with my sleep and sometimes it hurts me and most of the time it is no big deal. The important part is realizing that sleep is how we let our bodies repair, sleep is how we let go for a time and recover from our day and sleep is vital to being able to think and work through the problems and stresses of everyday life.

These are my essential 5 to staying sane through the days of no real set schedules.
What are your most important sanity-saving tips?
