Selective neglect is a necessary tool for not being frustrated when we cannot get to everything that we would like to. Sometimes certain tasks are very important to us and we do not want them dropping off entirely. But at certain times in our lives we have to put important things on the back burner and make a plan to get to that task at a later date.
One trick to getting back to the important tasks at some point is to make a plan. For instance, I have a project that I was starting to make headway on until some circumstances changed and I needed to focus on other things for several months. I moved that task, on my list and my brain, to a date when I think I might be able to start in on that project again. It's something important enough to me that I want to get back to it, but it is just not going to happen until some other things happen first. It's okay to not get to things right when we think we might, but having a plan gives those most important things a place in your mind and heart until you can get back to them.
Give important things you want to get back to a save-the-date and feel no guilt about putting your focus on the other things in your life until then. Use selective neglect when you just can't do everything today.
